[partial solve] Windows 7 Files disappear/reappear problem
Like others here I have struggled to find files I thought I have saved and have disappeared. Here's the situation: I go into program X, and save a file. Start Explorer and navigate to where it is saved, but the file does not exist! Go back into program X, click Save As... to get a File Dialogue, and the previously saved file is there. I.e. you actually only see the file depending on the application you're viewing it in. Right click on it to get properties and it says "Unable to display current owner." I could not take ownership of the file (it fails).( or modify permissions? I think) So here's the workaround I did: From within the application File Dialogue, rename the file. For some reason this actually works. Now use explorer and you will find the file, and it belongs to you. Make sure the "Authenticated Users" permission is set (you can also do this to get rid of the lock symbol) But seriously: what is causing this in the first place? Its happened with a bunch of different programs, and I'm still finding files I'm missing and have to restore manually....

Hi, This issue should be caused due to the corrupt permission settings for the file. There are a few causes can cause the corrupt permission settings, such as corrupt user profile, corrupt system files, third party software conflicts and so on. Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest you perform the following troubleshooting suggestions: 1. Create a new user account to test the issue 2. Perform a System File Checker to scan the system 3. Test the issue in Clean Boot What are the results? Hi. I have a similar problem with saved files sometimes not appearing in Explorer after saving. When I go back into the application and try to save the file again, the original saved file is listed and Explorer asks whether I want to overwrite the existing file i.e. is does appear to exist but is hidden in explorer. If I overwrite it the file remains hidden in Explorer. This is both confusing and a serious win 7 'inconsistency'. If it is due to corrupt file permissions then it just shouldn't happen except extremely rarely? Or is it a latent problem in my RAID 0 controller corrupting files?

Morning, A number of us were talking and attempting to find this thread. I have had this with both Office 10, files (Excel and Word) but we believe it also occurs with pictures. Recovering back thru the application does seem to work but it is troublesome to have worked 4 hours on a spreadsheet then you cannot find it for some period of time. Since the last posting on this question was back in August has a fix been discovered? Any and all help appreciated generall Windows 7 has been great, especially the split screen but this is killing us.

I turned off the UAC in Windows 7. Works after that.

All my documents disappeared, I ran a check disc and rebooted several times, the entire library was missing! Pictures documents everything. I checked the file setting to show the "hidden files" and they appear, but somewhat translucent. What is the deal with that? I guess that is a partial fix, but somewhat disconcerting. I will try the user settings, but there is only one user, me...
